Chinese Martial Arts Ornament 17cm

The Chinese martial arts ornament is used in the art of Penjing: Chinese landscape bonsai which has a rich history and tradition dating back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) in China. Rocks and small trees were planted on large shallow trays in order to create a miniature landscape that were designed to make the viewer feel as if they had visited that place. The aim was to refresh the mind. To further the illusion, these little figures, animals, huts and temples were placed under the trees and around the rocks to help show proportion.

This Chinese figure is practicing martial arts. His clothes are glazed in black, the skin is left to the natural colour of the clay.
