The satsuki azalea flowering bonsai tree is the most popular flowering species. They display a stunning range of red, pink and white flowers in spring and are an attractive evergreen species all year round.

This magnificent azalea bonsai tree is standing at approximately 90cm tall in a round, unglazed oriental pot with a width of 75cm and depth of 60cm. This azalea has been shaped into the informal upright style and is an impressive specimen. The branches are bushy and well balanced with excellent spacing in-between, making it a desirable tree for any bonsai collector. The roots around the trunk (nebari) are thick and exposed, showing the tree’s age and balance.

Approximate dimensions:

Height: 90cm
Depth: 60cm
Width: 75cm

Placement:

The azalea is native to woodlands of Japan and should be kept outdoors. Provide it with as much sun as possible to encourage flowering. During winter, it can tolerate temperatures as low as -7 °C but provide some protection from frost.

Watering and feeding:

They must be watered generously as soon as the top inch of soil gets dry. Do not let the soil dry out fully and avoid constant wetness. See our watering guide.
Only feed periodically during the growing season (March-Oct).

Pruning and wiring:

Deadhead the flowers immediately once they have finished blooming. Prune twigs and branches once the tree has finished flowering altogether (autumn).
Azalea wood is slightly more brittle than other species but still possible to wire. It is best to wire in autumn or winter.

Repotting:

Repot in early spring with a well-draining, lime-free bonsai soil mix.
