The Chinese elm bonsai tree ‘Ulmus parvifolia’ is popular with beginners because it is very adaptable and tolerant of most conditions, as well as being easy to train and satisfying to prune. It is a semi-deciduous tree with small, slightly serrated leaves and dark grey bark.

This beautiful Chinese elm bonsai tree is standing at approximately 34cm tall in a blue ceramic glazed oval oriental pot with a depth of 14cm and width of 21cm. This Chinese elm features an elegantly curving trunk with exposed roots and gracefully balanced branches with full foliage.

Chinese Elm Placement:

Chinese elm bonsai trees are one of the most popular varieties of bonsai as they can grow either indoors or outdoors.
If outdoors, the Chinese elm can be grown in full sun and/or partial shade and will drop its leaves in winter.
If kept indoors, choose a sunny windowsill that receives plenty of light. During winter, make sure that you keep it in a cool room away from central heating and it should hold some leaves.

Chinese Elm Watering and Feeding:

They must be watered generously as soon as the top inch of soil gets dry. Do not let the soil dry out fully and avoid constant wetness.
See our watering guide.
Only feed periodically during the growing season (March-Oct).

Chinese Elm Pruning and Wiring:

Chinese elms have an excellent twig structure and if pruned constantly will thicken quickly (ramification). They also grow fast and recover rapidly, making them the ideal pruning subject.
The Chinese elm is great for shaping with standard wiring.

Chinese Elm Repotting:

Repot in early spring with a well-draining bonsai soil mix.

Find our repotting guide here.

Please Note: measurements given are approximate. Depending on the season, the appearance of the tree may vary. The tree that you receive may differ in size and shape to the photo if it has grown or been pruned since.
