Satsuki Azalea Placement

The azalea is native to woodlands of Japan and should be kept outdoors. Provide it with as much sun as possible to encourage flowering. During winter, it can tolerate temperatures as low as -7 °C but provide some protection from frost.

Satsuki Azalea Watering and feeding

They must be watered generously as soon as the top inch of soil gets dry. Do not let the soil dry out fully and avoid constant wetness. See our watering guide.
Only feed periodically during the growing season (March-Oct).

Satsuki Azalea Pruning and wiring

Deadhead the flowers immediately once they have finished blooming. Prune twigs and branches once the tree has finished flowering altogether (autumn).
Azalea wood is slightly more brittle than other species but still possible to wire. It is best to wire in autumn or winter.

Satsuki Azalea Repotting

Repot in early spring with a well-draining, lime-free bonsai soil mix.
