The Chinese Shiwan figure, also known as Mud-Men, has a rich history and tradition dating back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) in China. They were made by villagers to make a living and used in the art of Penjing: Chinese landscape bonsai. Rocks and small trees were planted on large shallow trays in order to create a miniature landscape that were designed to make the viewer feel as if they had visited that place. The aim was to refresh the mind. To further the illusion, these little figures, animals, huts and temples were placed under the trees and around the rocks to help show proportion.

This Chinese Shiwan figure is a bonsai master working on his tree. His clothes are glazed in orange, the skin and bonsai pot are left to the natural colour of the clay.

Please note: appearance may vary as all ornaments are handmade.

To incorporate figures and ornaments into your penjing scene or bonsai tree, first select a theme that compliments the bonsai tree. It could be a serene garden, a bustling marketplace, or a tranquil mountain scene. After that, make sure that the ornaments that you choose are the correct size compared to the rest of the elements to show proportion and balance in the miniature scene. To add depth and meaning to the overall composition, include symbolic elements like miniature pagodas, stone lanterns, or animals that hold cultural significance in Chinese aesthetics, such as dragons or cranes.
