Sempervivum Light Requirements

• Outdoor Light: Sempervivum thrives in full sun to partial shade. Full sunlight helps the plant maintain its vibrant colors and compact shape, but some afternoon shade can be beneficial in very hot climates.
• Indoor Light: If grown indoors, place in a bright location, like a south or west-facing window, to provide ample sunlight. A lack of light can cause the plant to stretch and lose its shape.

Sempervivum Watering

• Watering Frequency: Sempervivum prefers the “soak and dry” method, similar to other succulents. Water deeply when the soil is completely dry. Depending on climate, this may be once every 1-3 weeks.
• Winter Dormancy: Sempervivum is dormant in winter and requires very little water during this period, especially if grown outdoors where it may receive natural rainfall.
• Avoid Overwatering: Ensure the soil has dried out completely before watering again. Too much moisture can cause root rot, which Sempervivum is particularly susceptible to.

Sempervivum Humidity and Temperature

• Humidity: These succulents prefer low humidity and do best in dry environments. High humidity can cause mold and rot, especially around the base.
• Temperature: Sempervivum is one of the few succulents that can withstand frost and even snow, tolerating temperatures as low as -34. Ideal growing temperatures are between           18-24°C, but they can handle both extreme cold and hot weather.

Sempervivum Soil Requirements

• Soil Type: Plant in a well-draining succulent or cactus mix.
• Pot Choice: Choose pots with drainage holes, especially if grown indoors. Terra cotta pots work well because they allow the soil to dry out more quickly, preventing root rot.

Sempervivum Pruning and Maintenance

• Removing Dead Leaves: Pull off any dead or dried leaves at the base of the plant to keep it looking tidy and to prevent pests or mold.
• Offsets and Clumping: Sempervivum naturally produces “chicks” or offsets around the main “hen.” These can be left to grow into clumps or removed and replanted to start new colonies.
• Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years or when you want to separate the offsets. Since Sempervivum is low-growing and prefers compact spaces, frequent repotting isn’t necessary.
