The Lonicera nitida, commonly known as the Box Honeysuckle, is a hardy outdoor bonsai renowned for its fine, dense foliage and exceptional ability to form compact, sculptural shapes. It is an evergreen species originating from China and is popular among beginners and experienced enthusiasts due to its resilience and rapid growth. While it does not flower as showily as other bonsai species, it produces small, delicate creamy flowers in spring, sometimes followed by tiny purple berries.
This particular tree stands approximately 43 cm tall and is beautifully presented in a light green ceramic bonsai pot measuring 27 cm in depth and 37 cm in width. Its strong structure and lush, refined canopy make it an ideal feature piece for patios, gardens, balconies, or bright outdoor spaces.

It thrives best in bright conditions, enjoying full sun to partial shade. During the hottest summer afternoons, providing some shade can help prevent leaf scorch. This species is tolerant of cold temperatures but should be protected from severe frost and freezing winds, especially when potted.
Watering
No strict schedule, watering needs vary based on climate, soil, airflow, and pot size.

Feeding
Feed weekly or fortnightly from March to October with Chrysal Liquid Bonsai Feed (2 ml per litre of water). Add directly to the water during submersion.
Use Naruko Slow Release Fertiliser, either sprinkled on the soil or placed in a fertiliser baskets.
Regular feeding encourages dense foliage, healthy root development, and balanced growth throughout the growing season. Reduce feeding from late autumn to winter when growth slows naturally.
Regular pruning is essential for maintaining the Lonicera’s compact, tidy appearance. During the active growing season (March–September), trim back new shoots once they extend beyond the desired silhouette. This species responds well to frequent trimming due to its vigorous growth.
Wiring may be applied at any time of year, but late autumn to winter is ideal, when growth is slower and the branches are easier to position. Use wire approximately the same thickness as the branch to guide its shape gently.
After any flowering, you may remove the faded blooms to maintain tidiness, though flowering is not the primary ornamental feature of this species.
