Extremely hardy in the UK climate, they tolerate cold well; protection is more important against prolonged winter waterlogging than frost itself, although young roots in shallow pots may need safeguarding during severe freezes. Good airflow helps prevent fungal issues, and watering should be reduced slightly during winter dormancy.
Regular pruning is required to maintain shape and density. Long shoots extending beyond the silhouette can be cut back to their base during the growing season to preserve structure. Repotting is typically necessary every 2–3 years, particularly if roots begin circling the pot, ensuring continued health and vigour in a free-draining bonsai compost.
