Straight Japanese White Pine 115cm

The Japanese White Pine bonsai (Pinus parviflora) is an elegant, evergreen outdoor tree prized for its soft, green needles and ornamental beauty when well shaped. Though slow growing, it is a highly rewarding species for bonsai enthusiasts.

This particular tree stands approximately 115cm tall and is elegantly presented in a brown unglazed ceramic bonsai pot measuring 29cm depth and 35cm width. Its compact size and graceful shape make it perfect for desks, windowsills, or shelves adding a calming, natural aesthetic to any space.

The Japanese White Pine is a hardy species that tolerates harsh conditions and should be kept outdoors. Choose a location with bright, full sun. While pines can tolerate some shade, they will produce longer needles in low light—an undesirable trait in bonsai design. We recommend protecting the tree from severe frost and freezing temperatures, as the bonsai pot can freeze. Use a cold frame or move it to an unheated greenhouse or similar sheltered space during extreme cold

Watering

No strict schedule, watering needs vary based on climate, soil, airflow, and pot size.

Feeding

Feed weekly or fortnightly from March to October with Chrysal Liquid Bonsai Feed (2 ml per litre of water). Add directly to the water during submersion.

Use Naruko Slow Release Fertiliser, either sprinkled on the soil or placed in a fertiliser baskets.

Regular pruning keeps your bonsai healthy, compact, and aesthetically pleasing. During the growing season (March–September). Japanese White Pines grow upward quickly, which can weaken lower branches and inner shoots. To keep a balanced shape, pinch back the growing tips in summer to slow upward growth and encourage branching lower down. When new buds (called candles) appear, let them grow to about 3 cm, then cut them back halfway using sharp scissors. If a branch has more than two candles, remove the extras, but always leave two.

Wiring is best done during late autumn, when the tree’s growth naturally slows. Use wire that is approximately the same thickness as the branch. This helps gently shape and refine your bonsai’s structure over time.
