The Hornbeam (Carpinus spp.) is an outdoor, deciduous bonsai that is hardy. Its leaves are oval-shaped with finely serrated edges and prominent, deep veins, giving them a textured appearance. During the growing season, the foliage is a vibrant green, turning yellow or golden-brown in autumn.
This particular tree stands approximately 48 cm tall and is elegantly presented in a blue ceramic bonsai pot measuring 24 cm depth and 30 cm width. Its compact size and upright shape make it perfect for desks, windowsills, or shelves adding a calming, natural aesthetic to any space.

Hornbeam bonsai are outdoor trees and should be positioned where they can enjoy full sun during the growing season. Partial shade in the hottest part of the day is beneficial, particularly in mid-summer. During winter, protect the tree from severe frost by placing it in a cold frame or sheltered outdoor area.

Feed weekly or fortnightly from March to October with Chrysal Liquid Bonsai Feed (2 ml per litre of water). Add directly to the water during submersion.
Use Naruko Slow Release Fertiliser, either sprinkled on the soil or placed in a fertiliser baskets.
Regular pruning keeps your bonsai healthy, compact, and aesthetically pleasing. During the growing season (March–September). Trim back new shoots once they grow beyond 3–4 leaves, leaving the two closest leaves.
Wiring is best done during late autumn, when the tree’s growth naturally slows. Use wire that is approximately the same thickness as the branch. This helps gently shape and refine your bonsai’s structure over time.
