The Hinoki Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) is a graceful outdoor bonsai known for its soft, fan-shaped foliage and naturally layered branch structure. Highly valued in Japanese horticulture for its refined texture and rich, deep-green colour, this species brings an elegant, calming presence to any outdoor setting. Its slow, steady growth makes it ideal for bonsai styling and long-term refinement.
This particular tree stands approximately 35cm and is beautifully presented in an unglazed bonsai pot measuring 13cm in depth and 17cm in width. Its compact form, lush foliage, and natural symmetry make it a striking addition to patios, balconies, or garden displays.

No strict schedule, watering needs vary based on climate, soil, airflow, and pot size.
We recommend using the submersion method, which we’ve detailed on our Best Way to Water a Bonsai Tree blog post.
Feeding
Feed weekly or fortnightly from March to October with Chrysal Liquid Bonsai Feed (2 ml per litre of water). Add directly to the water during submersion.
Use Naruko Slow Release Fertiliser, either sprinkled on the soil or placed in a fertiliser baskets.
Regular pruning maintains the layered, cloud-like structure that Hinoki Cypress bonsai are prized for.
During the growing season (March–September):
Pinch or trim back new growing tips to maintain compact foliage pads.
Avoid cutting deep into old wood, as Hinoki Cypress does not back-bud strongly from older branches.
Thin dense areas slightly to improve airflow and promote even growth.
Wiring is best done in late autumn or winter, when growth slows and foliage is less delicate.
Use wire that matches the thickness of the branch, and check regularly to prevent marks. Hinoki branches are flexible when young but stiffen with age.
