Hawthorn bonsai must be kept outdoors year-round. Place in a bright location with full sun to encourage strong growth, flowering, and fruiting. This species benefits from seasonal changes, including a cold winter dormancy period.
During winter, the tree will lose its leaves and enter dormancy. Hawthorn is hardy but should be protected from extreme frost, especially the roots, as bonsai pots can freeze. A sheltered spot, cold frame, or unheated greenhouse is ideal during severe cold spells.
Indoors
Hawthorn is not suitable for indoor growing. Keeping it indoors will weaken the tree over time due to lack of seasonal conditions and insufficient light.
Watering
No strict schedule, watering needs vary based on climate, soil, airflow, and pot size. Hawthorn prefers evenly moist soil but should not be left waterlogged. Allow the top layer of soil to begin drying slightly between watering.

Feeding
Feed weekly or fortnightly from early spring to late summer using a balanced bonsai fertiliser to support healthy growth, flowering, and berry production.
Outdoors – Use Naruko Slow Release Fertiliser, either sprinkled on the soil or placed in fertiliser baskets.
Regular pruning helps maintain shape and encourages dense branching. Trim back new shoots during the growing season to refine the structure.
Wiring can be carried out during the dormant season or early growth phase. Take care, as Hawthorn branches can be brittle and may have thorns.
