Description

Fruit-producing fig bonsai are usually the species Ficus carica, commonly known as the common fig. This variety is a deciduous tree that naturally loses its leaves in autumn and enters a winter dormancy period. When grown in suitable conditions, it produces real figs, making it both an attractive and rewarding bonsai species.

This particular tree stands approximately 28cm tall and is elegantly presented in a blue oval ceramic bonsai pot measuring 11cm depth and 15cm width. Its compact size and graceful shape make it perfect for desks, windowsills, or shelves adding a calming, natural aesthetic to any space.

Placement

Fig bonsai, most commonly the species Ficus carica, are outdoor trees that should be kept outside where they can receive plenty of natural sunlight and good airflow. A bright location with full sun is ideal, as strong sunlight encourages healthy growth and helps the tree produce fruit. These trees benefit from natural seasonal changes and thrive in warm summer conditions.

During winter, fig bonsai are deciduous and will lose their leaves as they enter dormancy. This is a natural part of their growth cycle. In periods of extreme frost or very harsh winter weather, some protection may be required. Placing the tree in a sheltered outdoor location, cold frame, or unheated greenhouse can help protect the roots from freezing.

If the tree begins to produce weak growth, large leaves, or fails to develop fruit, it may indicate that the tree is not receiving enough sunlight. Ensuring the tree receives adequate light will help maintain healthy growth and encourage reliable fruit production.

Watering and Feeding

Watering

No strict schedule, watering needs vary based on climate, soil, airflow, and pot size. When the bonsai is fruiting you may need to water it more.
We recommend using the submersion method, which we’ve detailed on our Best Way to Water a Bonsai Tree blog post.

Feeding

Feed weekly or fortnightly from March to October with Chrysal Liquid Bonsai Feed (2 ml per litre of water). Add directly to the water during submersion.

Use Naruko Slow Release Fertiliser, either sprinkled on the soil or placed in a fertiliser baskets.

Pruning and Wiring

Regular pruning keeps your bonsai healthy, compact, and aesthetically pleasing. During the growing season (March–September), trim back new shoots once they grow beyond 3–4 leaves, leaving the two closest leaves intact.

Wiring is best done during late autumn, when the tree’s growth naturally slows. Use wire that is approximately the same thickness as the branch. This helps gently shape and refine your bonsai’s structure over time.

Repotting

Repot in early spring with a well-draining bonsai soil mix.
