Picturesque Chinese Juniper 77cm

The Juniper is one of the most popular bonsai trees and is best kept as an outdoor evergreen bonsai. There are many species under the name Juniperus, ranging from low-growing shrubs to small trees, with either scale-like or needle-like foliage.

This particular tree stands approximately 77cm tall and is elegantly presented in a brown unglazed ceramic bonsai pot measuring 20cm depth and 25cm width. Its compact size and graceful shape make it perfect for desks, windowsills, or shelves adding a calming, natural aesthetic to any space.

Choose an outdoor location that receives full, direct sunlight. Junipers are very hardy but should not be kept indoors and need to be protected from temperatures below -10 °C. During winter, it’s normal for the foliage to turn a purplish-brown colour. This is part of the tree’s natural frost protection mechanism, and the leaves will return to green in spring. We recommend protecting the tree from severe frost and freezing temperatures, as the bonsai pot can freeze. Use a cold frame or move it to an unheated greenhouse or similar sheltered space during extreme cold.

Watering

No strict schedule, watering needs vary based on climate, soil, airflow, and pot size.

Feeding

Feed weekly or fortnightly from March to October with Chrysal Liquid Bonsai Feed (2 ml per litre of water). Add directly to the water during submersion.

Use Naruko Slow Release Fertiliser, either sprinkled on the soil or placed in a fertiliser baskets.

Regular pruning keeps your bonsai healthy, compact, and aesthetically pleasing. During the growing season (March–September). Throughout the growing season, you can trim or pinch back long shoots that stick out from the shape of the tree. Approximately, when they reach 5 cm in length, prune them back to maintain a compact shape.

Wiring is best done during late autumn, when the tree’s growth naturally slows. Use wire that is approximately the same thickness as the branch. This helps gently shape and refine your bonsai’s structure over time.
