This bonsai tree is best kept outdoors year-round. Place in a bright location with plenty of natural light, ideally with access to direct sunlight for healthy growth. Seasonal changes, including a cooler winter period, help maintain the tree’s natural growth cycle.
During winter, some species may lose their leaves and enter dormancy. While many outdoor bonsai are hardy, it is advisable to protect the roots from extreme frost, as bonsai pots can freeze. A sheltered spot, cold frame, or unheated greenhouse is ideal during severe cold spells.
Indoors
Outdoor bonsai are generally not suitable for indoor growing. Keeping them indoors can weaken the tree over time due to reduced light levels and lack of seasonal variation.
Watering
No strict schedule, watering needs vary depending on climate, soil, airflow, and pot size. Keep the soil evenly moist, allowing the top layer to begin drying slightly between watering. Avoid letting the tree dry out completely or sit in waterlogged soil.

Feeding
Feed weekly or fortnightly during the growing season (spring to late summer) using a balanced bonsai fertiliser to encourage healthy growth.
Outdoors – Use Naruko Slow Release Fertiliser, either sprinkled on the soil or placed in fertiliser baskets.
Regular pruning helps maintain the tree’s shape and encourages dense branching. Trim back new growth during the growing season to refine structure.
Wiring can be carried out during the dormant season or active growth phase, depending on the species. Check wires regularly to avoid marking the bark.
