Description

The Schefflera Bonsai (Schefflera arboricola), commonly known as the Dwarf Umbrella Tree, is a popular indoor bonsai admired for its distinctive foliage and tropical appearance. Its glossy green leaves grow in clusters that resemble the shape of small umbrellas, creating a lush and vibrant canopy that adds a refreshing natural aesthetic to any space.

This resilient tropical species is well suited for indoor environments and is known for being easy to care for, making it an excellent choice for beginners as well as experienced bonsai enthusiasts. Over time, the tree develops an attractive trunk and branching structure, giving it the classic miniature tree appearance associated with traditional bonsai.

This particular tree stands approximately 37cm and is beautifully presented in an blue bonsai pot measuring 19cm in depth and 19cm in width. Its compact form, lush foliage, and natural symmetry make it a striking addition to patios, balconies, or garden displays.

Placement

Schefflera bonsai thrive in bright indoor environments with plenty of natural light. A position near a bright window with indirect sunlight is ideal.

While the tree can tolerate some direct sunlight, too much intense sun may scorch the leaves. During the warmer months, it can benefit from being placed outdoors in a warm, sheltered location where it can receive fresh air and additional light.

As a tropical species, Schefflera should be protected from cold temperatures and frost.

Watering and Feeding

Watering

No strict schedule, watering needs vary based on climate, soil, airflow, and pot size.

We recommend using the submersion method, which we’ve detailed on our Best Way to Water a Bonsai Tree blog post.

Feeding

Feed weekly or fortnightly from March to October with Chrysal Liquid Bonsai Feed (2 ml per litre of water). Add directly to the water during submersion.

Pruning and Wiring

Regular pruning helps maintain the bonsai’s compact shape and encourages fuller foliage growth.

During the growing season (March–September), trim back long shoots to maintain the desired form and encourage branching. Schefflera responds well to regular pruning, making it easy to shape over time.

Wiring can be used to guide branches into position, although care should be taken as branches can be flexible and delicate. Use bonsai wire approximately the same thickness as the branch to shape the tree gradually.

Repotting

Repot in early spring with a well-draining bonsai soil mix.
