Description

The Jade Plant bonsai (Crassula ovata), is a highly popular choice for both beginners and enthusiasts due to its exceptional resilience and minimal care requirements. As a succulent species, it stores water in its plump, glossy leaves, making it particularly tolerant of dry indoor conditions. Its smooth, rounded leaves and thick branching structure give it a distinctive, sculptural appearance that symbolises prosperity and good fortune in many cultures.

This particular tree stands approximately 140cm tall and is beautifully presented in a ceramic pot measuring 54cm depth and 54cm width. Its compact, elegant form makes it ideal for desks, windowsills, or shelves, bringing a bright, uplifting, and modern aesthetic to any space.

Placement

Indoors

Place your Jade Plant in a bright location with plenty of indirect sunlight. A south- or west-facing windowsill is ideal. As a succulent, it prefers warm, dry indoor environments and should be kept away from cold drafts or overly humid rooms. With consistent bright light, Jade Plants maintain compact growth and vibrant leaf colour.

Outdoors

Jade Plants can be placed outdoors during warm months, ideally in a spot with bright, indirect light or light morning sun. Protect from intense midday heat, heavy rain, and frost. If kept outdoors in summer, gradually acclimate it to prevent sunburn on its fleshy leaves. Always bring it indoors before temperatures drop below 10°C.

Watering and Feeding

Watering

Jade Plants require far less water than traditional bonsai.

  • Allow the soil to dry out almost completely between waterings.

  • Water thoroughly when the soil is dry, ensuring any excess drains away.

  • Avoid overwatering, as succulents are highly susceptible to root rot.

The submersion method can be used occasionally, but sparingly—only when the soil is fully dry.

Feeding

Indoors & Outdoors – Feed monthly during the growing season (April–September) with Chrysal Liquid Bonsai Feed (2 ml per litre of water). Avoid feeding in winter when growth naturally slows.

Pruning and Wiring

Regular pruning helps maintain shape and encourages branching. Trim back new, soft shoots during the growing season (spring–summer) to keep the canopy compact. Jade branches are brittle, so wiring should be done with great care—only lightly and gradually shaping young, flexible branches. Avoid heavy bends that can cause snapping.

Repotting

Repot every 2–3 years in spring using a well-draining succulent or bonsai soil mix with added grit or pumice. Ensure the pot has excellent drainage to prevent excess moisture around the roots.
