The Premna Bonsai (Premna microphylla) is a popular tropical bonsai species admired for its dense foliage and naturally rugged appearance. It features small, rounded green leaves that grow in compact clusters, creating a full and lush canopy. Over time, the tree develops an attractive trunk with textured bark, giving it a mature and characterful bonsai aesthetic.
This hardy species responds very well to pruning and shaping, making it a favourite among both beginners and experienced bonsai enthusiasts. Its fast-growing nature also allows it to develop beautiful branching structure relatively quickly.
This particular tree stands approximately 28cm and is beautifully presented in a cream bonsai pot measuring 12cm in depth and 16cm in width. Its compact form, lush foliage, and natural symmetry make it a striking addition to patios, balconies, or garden displays.

They thrive in bright indirect light but can also tolerate some direct sunlight.
During the warmer months, the tree will benefit from being placed outdoors in a sunny, sheltered position, where it can receive fresh air and additional light.
As a tropical species, Premna should be protected from cold temperatures and frost.
Watering
No strict schedule, watering needs vary based on climate, soil, airflow, and pot size.

Feeding
Feed weekly or fortnightly from March to October with Chrysal Liquid Bonsai Feed (2 ml per litre of water). Add directly to the water during submersion.
Premna bonsai respond extremely well to pruning, which helps maintain their compact shape and encourages dense foliage.
During the growing season (March–September), trim back new shoots once they extend beyond the desired shape. Regular pruning helps create a fuller canopy and refined bonsai structure.
Wiring can be carried out during active growth periods when branches are flexible. Use bonsai wire approximately the same thickness as the branch to gently guide the tree’s shape.
