Kanuma Graded Bonsai Soil is a lightweight volcanic pumice growing medium. It has a phenomenal moisture-holding capacity and is light as popcorn. It is used in Japan for growing Satsuki Azaleas. Specifically, those with fine roots penetrating the grains in search of moisture. It is ideal for use with any Bonsai that prefers a slightly wetter soil. One of its uses is that it can be added to other bonsai soils to lower the overall ph level. The acidity makes this a great soil for trees such as Chinese Elm, Juniper, Azalea, Gardenia and Camellias, larches, willows, pines, acers and among many others. This being said it is almost always used on its own with no other ingredients, it is very free draining yet has the capacity to hold huge amounts of moisture within the structure of the grains.
Add 10% to 20% into your bonsai soil mix. It provides good water and nutrient retention, but be aware that kanuma is sof,t and you may not end up with the full-advertised volume due to settlement and abrasion in transit. This product is really effective for addressing leaf scorch on broadleaf bonsai. This typically occurs when the soil is drying out in the summer.
