Japanese Pumice Bonsai Soil Description
Japanese Pumice is a naturally occurring volcanic substrate widely used in Japan for bonsai cultivation. Its light yet durable, porous granules allow water to drain freely while retaining enough moisture for roots to absorb between waterings. This pH-neutral material is inert, meaning it does not break down easily, making it ideal for long-term use in bonsai containers. Japanese Pumice is an excellent partner to Akadama and Fuji Grit, forming part of a well-balanced bonsai soil mix. Its pale colour also offers a clean, understated look, either within the mix or as a top dressing.

How to Use
Whilst Japanese Pumice can be used directly from the bag, it is recommended to sieve the material to remove fine dust before use.
For most bonsai mixes, Japanese Pumice makes up around 25–50% of the substrate, combined with Akadama for nutrient retention and Fuji Grit for improved drainage. It can also be used on its own for species that require a free-draining medium or as a decorative top dressing to improve presentation and surface stability.
