Sedum Light Requirements
- Bright Light: Sedums need a lot of sunlight indoors. Place them in a south- or west-facing window where they can get 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- Supplemental Lighting: If natural light is limited, use a full-spectrum grow light for about 12-14 hours per day to ensure they get enough light. Without adequate light, sedums may become leggy and lose their compact, attractive shape.
Sedum Soil and Potting
- Well-Draining Soil: Use a cactus or succulent potting mix to ensure fast drainage, which is crucial for indoor Sedums.
- Pot Selection: Choose a pot with drainage holes to prevent water from accumulating at the bottom, as sedums are very sensitive to root rot. A shallow, wide pot works well for most sedum varieties, allowing them to spread out naturally.
- Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years to refresh the soil and prevent root crowding, especially if you notice roots growing out of the drainage holes.
Sedum Watering
- Sparingly: Sedums need very little water indoors. Water only when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry to the touch.
- Watering Frequency: Typically, you’ll need to water every 1-2 weeks , but this may vary with your indoor humidity and temperature. In winter, when sedums enter a semi-dormant state, reduce watering to once every 2-3 weeks or when the soil is completely dry.
- Watering Technique: Water at the base of the plant to keep leaves dry and prevent rot, which can occur if water sits on the leaves.
Humidity and Temperature
- Low Humidity: Sedums thrive in dry conditions, so they’re well-suited to indoor environments with low to moderate humidity. Avoid high-humidity areas like bathrooms.
- Temperature: Indoor temperatures between 16-24°C are ideal, with a slight drop at night. Sedums can tolerate cooler temperatures, but avoid drafts or sudden temperature drops below 10°C
