Light Requirements
Place your cactus in a location with plenty of sunlight. Most cacti, thrive in full sun exposure. If growing indoors, position the cactus near a south- or west-facing window to ensure it receives adequate light throughout the day.
Temperature
Cacti prefer warm environments. Generally, they thrive in temperatures between (21°C to 38°C) during the day and can tolerate cooler temperatures at night. However, avoid exposing them to freezing temperatures, as this can damage the plant.
Soil
Use a well-draining cactus mix to prevent overwatering and root rot. You can use cactus soil or a good mix should include sand, perlite, or pumice to enhance drainage. This is crucial as cacti are highly susceptible to rot if left in waterlogged soil.
Watering
Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Cacti are drought-tolerant and prefer to be watered sparingly. During the growing season (spring and summer), water more frequently, but reduce watering significantly in the winter when the cactus enters a dormant state. Overwatering can lead to root rot, one of the most common issues with cactus care.
Container
If growing your cactus in a container, ensure it has drainage holes to prevent water from pooling at the bottom. This helps maintain the well-draining conditions that cacti require.
Fertilization
Fertilize sparingly during the growing season (spring and summer) using a diluted, balanced cactus fertilizer. Typically, feeding once a month during these active growth periods is sufficient. Avoid fertilizing in the winter months when the cactus is not actively growing.
Pruning
Pruning cacti is generally minimal. However, if you notice dead or damaged spines, remove them with sterilized tweezers or tongs. Be very cautious of the sharp spines when handling your cactus to avoid injury.
Caution
Many cacti have sharp spines or needles. Always handle your cactus with care and consider using gloves or tools to avoid injury. Place your cactus in a location where it won’t pose a risk to pets or people.
