Acer palmatum var. dissectum Placement

Acer palmatum var. dissectum, also known as the Japanese Maple, is native to Japan, Korea, and China. This bonsai thrives in partial shade to full sun, depending on the climate. In warmer regions, it’s best to place the bonsai where it can receive morning sun and afternoon shade to protect its delicate, lacy foliage from scorching. In cooler climates, it can handle more direct sunlight.

Japanese Maples are sensitive to extreme temperatures. During hot summers, consider providing additional shade or bringing the bonsai indoors during peak heat. In winter, the plant should be kept in a cool, sheltered spot where temperatures do not drop below -5 degrees C. If necessary, bring it indoors to protect it from frost.

Acer palmatum var. dissectum Watering and Feeding

Water your Acer palmatum var. dissectum bonsai consistently, ensuring the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. Japanese Maples prefer well-drained soil, so avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely. During the growing season, water deeply whenever the top inch of soil feels dry. In winter, reduce watering but do not let the soil dry out.

Feed your bonsai with a balanced fertilizer every two weeks during the growing season, from early spring to late summer. In early autumn, switch to a low-nitrogen fertilizer to help prepare the plant for dormancy.

Acer palmatum var. dissectum Pruning and Wiring

Pruning is essential to maintain the intricate, cascading form of Acer palmatum var. dissectum. During the growing season, regularly prune back new shoots to 2-3 nodes to control growth and maintain the desired shape. Prune any crossing branches or overly dense areas to improve airflow and light penetration.

While wiring can be used to shape the tree, it should be done with caution as the branches are delicate and prone to breakage. It is often preferable to shape this bonsai through careful pruning rather than wiring.

Acer palmatum var. dissectum Repotting

Repot your Acer palmatum var. dissectum bonsai every 2-3 years in early spring before the leaves begin to emerge. Use a well-draining bonsai soil mix, and consider using a pot with good depth to accommodate the tree’s spreading root system. When repotting, carefully prune the roots to encourage healthy new growth and maintain the bonsai’s compact form.
